At Whirlwind, we’ve learned to do a lot with a little.

It is shocking to see a person shuffling along on the ground or a young person stuck living out life in a bed.  Yet, this is the daily reality for millions of men, women, and children who need wheelchairs.  More than simply seating them on top of a set of wheels, with Whirlwind you can be a part of helping wheelchair riders to achieve all that they can in life.  Whirlwind is committed to developing the best-value rugged wheelchairs in the world - value for the riders so they can go where they need to go and value for the donors so that you can make the most of every dollar you invest.  A Whirlwind wheelchair is more than a beautiful charitable act, it is an investment in the inclusion and maximum achievement of a wheelchair rider.  Our chairs last for years and are 100% field repairable which means your donation will live on and on.

Whirlwind may be a different kind of non-profit than Serafin rides fast in Mindanao, Philippinesyou are familiar with.  We are a social enterprise.  This means that we apply business principles to keep our internal costs low and make the most impact with the resources we have.  Charities, governments, and foundations purchase our wheelchairs at prices slightly over the cost of production.  Making a truly excellent wheelchair requires substantial investments in research and development and quality control, these 'General Fund' donations are where our private donors make their best contribution.  Please see the projects below for specific opportunities or simply use the Donate button to make your donation now.  We always appreciate ‘General Fund’ contributions which provide the flexible funding we need to respond to unexpected needs and opportunities.

Featured Project:  Wheelchairs and New Production in Indonesia

Indonesia is one of the poorest and most disaster prone countries in the world with earthquakes, tsunamis, and 155 volcanoes.  According to the World Health Organization, there are 6.4 million children with disabilities in Indonesia and at least as many adults. Even though there are many schools, most kids who need a wheelchair don’t attend. Severe poverty makes a good quality wheelchair impossibly expensive. For growing kids, this means education ends early when they become too heavy for parents to carry.

Whirlwind's Indonesia project combines the provision of 200 wheelchairs for kids and adults with development of local wheelchair production which will support thousands of wheelchair riders for decades. Read More and See Other Projects
